The freeze response: definition and why it happens
The freeze response is an automatic, involuntary state of stillness your nervous system triggers when a threat feels sudden or inescapable and fighting or fleeing won’t help. Heart rate drops, muscles tense or go numb, and thinking narrows, often felt as being stuck, frozen, or unable to speak or move. It’s a survival reflex, not a choice.
What happens in your body during a freeze response?
Freezing looks passive, but your body isn’t idle. A 2017 review in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, by psychologist Karin Roelofs, found freezing runs through the parasympathetic nervous system. It shows up as a brief drop in heart rate, the opposite of the sympathetic surge that drives fight-or-flight.

Why does freeze happen instead of fight or flight?
A 2015 review in Harvard Review of Psychiatry by Kozlowska and colleagues places freezing inside a broader “defense cascade,” the sequence your nervous system moves through under threat. In their model, freezing is fight-or-flight held in reserve: your body stays still while it works out whether fighting or running would actually help.
Freezing is also distinct from tonic immobility, the more extreme “playing dead” response people sometimes describe. The same research places tonic immobility later in the cascade. It’s a last resort your body reaches for once fighting or fleeing has already failed, not the first response to a threat. The APA Dictionary of Psychology similarly defines freezing behavior as a form of passive avoidance: staying motionless rather than trying to run or hide.
