Sensory Overload: Calming an Overstimulated System
Sensory overload happens when your nervous system takes in more sound, light, touch, or smell than it can process at once, and it responds like something is wrong. Step 1: Cut the loudest input first
Pick whichever sense is driving the overload hardest, and reduce that one first. Step outside, put on noise-canceling headphones or sunglasses, or move a few steps away from the crowd. You don’t need to fix everything at once, just the loudest channel.
Step 2: If you can’t leave, shrink your world
Sometimes stepping out isn’t an option: a meeting, a family dinner, a flight. Close your eyes for a few seconds, cup your hands loosely over your ears, or focus on one neutral texture, like your sleeve or a cool glass of water. The goal is to give your senses one thing to track instead of everything at once.
Step 3: Add bilateral stimulation
This is EMDR’s core technique, and it gives your overloaded senses one steady, predictable channel to follow instead of many competing ones.
