Why do small things suddenly set you off?
A trigger is any sound, phrase, or situation that sets off a strong reaction because your brain has linked it to an earlier stressful experience, according to the APA Dictionary of Psychology. Neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux’s research on the brain’s emotion circuits found that the amygdala, your brain’s threat detector, has a fast, direct route to danger cues, built to act before slower, conscious thought catches up. When something later resembles a past threatening moment, even loosely, the amygdala can react through that same fast route before your slower, thinking brain checks whether you’re actually in danger.
That reaction threshold isn’t fixed. Your window of tolerance, the zone of arousal where you can feel stress without it running the show, narrows under chronic stress, so things that used to fit comfortably inside it now push you out (Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2011). Sleep is one of the fastest ways to shrink it further: a 2007 study in Current Biology found that after a single night with no sleep at all, the amygdala reacted about 60% more strongly to negative images, while its connection to the prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain that normally keeps reactions in proportion, measurably weakened. A rough stretch of sleep, on its own, can explain a lot.

Ground yourself before you try to lower the charge
Before you work with whatever set you off, spend a minute somewhere calmer. Picture a real or imagined place where you feel safe, or run a quick grounding check: name what you can see, feel your feet on the floor, slow your exhale. Staying inside your window of tolerance is what makes the next steps land, instead of feeding the reaction further.
Go slow: work with one trigger at a time
Pick one recent, specific trigger, not the biggest one you can think of and not every version of this that’s ever happened to you. A slow reply from one person today is workable. Every slight you’ve ever felt, all at once, is not; it’s too much to work with directly, and it isn’t actually what just happened. Keep the session short, just a few minutes.
Know your stop point
If your distress rises above a 7 out of 10 and doesn’t settle, stop. Ground yourself again, and consider working with a professional rather than pushing through alone, especially if what surfaced feels bigger than today’s moment.
A short bilateral-stimulation practice to lower reactivity
With grounding and a stop point in place, here’s a short round of bilateral stimulation (BLS), the rhythmic left-right technique at the center of EMDR:
- Rate it. On a 0–10 scale, how strong is the reaction right now? Note the number.
- Name the trigger, not the verdict. “That comment stung” instead of “everyone’s against me” or “I’m too sensitive.”
- Add a fairness phrase. Something like “this is today’s reaction, not the whole story” or “I can feel this and still be okay.” It doesn’t have to feel true yet.
- Add bilateral stimulation. Move your eyes smoothly left and right for 20 to 30 seconds, tap your knees or shoulders left-right (the butterfly hug), or use alternating left-right audio tones if you have headphones.
- Pause and notice. Breathe. Notice whatever shifted, a little distance, a quieter edge, without forcing anything.
- Repeat 3 to 5 short rounds, checking in between each one.
- Re-rate. If it’s easing, that’s a good place to stop for today. If it climbs and won’t come back down, stop and ground yourself instead.
