Overreacting to small things is rarely about the small thing itself. A short reset for turning the volume down
This isn’t about deciding the trigger deserved a smaller reaction. It probably did, and you already know that. It’s about bringing your body back down from wherever it already was.
- Pause before you act on it. Even a few seconds is enough for the first spike to crest instead of steering what you say or do next.
- Rate it. On a 0 to 10 scale, how loud does this feel right now?
- Name the trigger, not the verdict. “My phone screen cracked” instead of “I ruin everything” or “Nothing ever goes right.” A 2007 study in Psychological Science found that putting a feeling into words measurably calmed activity in the amygdala, the same alarm system driving the reaction.
- Add bilateral stimulation. This is bilateral stimulation (BLS), the rhythmic left-right technique at the center of EMDR therapy. Tap left, right, left, right on your knees or thighs, or cross your arms and tap your own shoulders (the butterfly hug), for 20 to 30 seconds. - Pause and re-rate. Notice whatever shifted, even slightly. Repeat two or three short rounds if it helps.
